Located in the midst of the Sandhills, Merritt Reservoir is 28 miles southwest of Valentine on Highway 97, fi ve miles past Snake River Falls (see p. 23). Th e lake has nearly 3,000 acres of water, pure sand beaches and 73 miles of tree-lined shore. Boaters enjoy lighted boat ramp areas and plenty of water for skiing, sailing and swimming.
Merritt is one of the top trophy fi sheries in the state. Dozens of master angler and state records have been recorded
here. Th e lake is known for its largemouth, smallmouth and white bass, as well as perch, crappie, bluegill, channel cat-fish, muskellunge, northern pike and walleye.
There is one resort at the lake, but otherwise it is undeveloped. Merritt is so distant from city lights that amateur astronomers gather here each July for the “Nebraska Star Party.” The park is open year-round, though the peak season is May through September. A state park permit is required. Electrical and primitive camping available, along with handicapped accessible showers, restrooms and picnic areas. (402) 376-3320.
