Valentine State Fish Hatchery

 
 
Located in a pine-covered valley one mile east and one
mile north of Valentine, the Valentine Fish Hatchery is one of five hatcheries that the State Game and Parks Commission operates. Hatcheries aren’t a new idea. For more than a century, demand for fish has exceeded the natural supply. Th e state’s original fi sh
hatchery opened in South Bend in 1879. Th e Valentine hatchery opened in 1912.

Spread over 700 acres and including 21 ponds, the
hatchery handles 60 million walleye eggs, fi ve million
perch eggs and three million northern pike eggs (in addition
to other species of fi sh) annually. Last year, lakes
in Cherry County alone were stocked with some 675,000
fish.

Just north of the hatchery, Government Canyon is a
640-acre area of prime wildlife habitat. It off ers opportunities
for hiking, biking, birdwatching, and hunting in
specifi ed areas.
To find the hatchery, drive north on Green Street, the
north-south street on the eastern edge of Valentine.
